Rest day in Tonopah, NV

When we (I) planned this trip last summer (instead of planning my fall courses), I thought it'd be wise to break up the longish leg of the trip from Zion to Yosemite into 2 days. Timing-wise, it would fall in the middle of our trip, and seemed like a good time to incorporate a rest day, or at least mostly a rest day. On the map, and with the help of driving maps online, Tonopah, Nevada, looked like a fair enough spot that was more than halfway in between our two points. Further searching online turned up the Best Western Hi Desert Inn, which seemed to have everything we needed - hot breakfast included, free wireless internet, and a swimming pool. And, as if that weren't enough, they had a room with 3 queen beds in it, so we didn't have to buy two rooms, just the one. Ding, ding, we have a winner!!

It turned out to be a decent plan. We got on the road early out of Zion, and were checked in at the Best Western by early afternoon. The kids swam in the "heated" pool (not heated enough to tempt Bill or me) and we snacked on the homemade chocolate chip cookies they had out at the front desk. We lounged around for the rest of the day and evening - it was a good break at the right time. We didn't even go out for dinner (there wasn't much to choose from, anyway) - Bill scored our supper from the gas station/convenience store across the street, a fine array of Lunchables for the kids and me (these aren't bad! I'm going to get some for my office, as a backup for days when I can't manage to get away), and a burrito for Bill, heated in our room's microwave. A feast!

We turned in early and had a decent night's sleep.
