Our wild night in Vegas

It's 7:43pm local time, and we're not all asleep, but we are all in bed. Tired puppies, all 5 of us.

We finally got in our rooms - nice adjoining rooms on the 29th floor, which means we have a great view. We are looking south, so we can see the Sierra Nevadas (love how the mountains in the western US just jut up out of the ground - a land of contrasts, in a lot of ways). Next door is the 'New York' section of buildings, and behind them is a rollercoaster, which we can see in full view. So, it's cool and the kids think so, too. But, nothing could be done before we donned bathing suits and hit the pools downstairs. There's a lazy river and a wave pool, and the wave pool was the best - mostly because it was almost completely in the shade. I could've sat in the shade in the gentle waves all day. Lovely. And the people-watching - oh my! Let's just say there wasn't much left to the imagination - and some of these folks could have done us all a favor and left a little more to the imagination! Ow, my eyes! One man's unk-jay was falling out of his too-small ants-pay. Eww! Bill, quoting Dutch, said "it pays to advertise!".

We air-dried instantly in the dry heat, came back up and changed back into our clothes and had a nice Asian dinner (Bill had sushi; kids and I had chicken fried rice) in one of the restaurants downstairs. Then we walked down to the Bellagio and saw the beautiful dancing water fountains. So cool! We walked into the lobby of the B and saw the famous (Dale) Chihuly glass flowers - they were lovely. Beyond them were real flowers in a beautiful garden. So pretty. I've been nursing my trick gut for a few days now, so I can report that the B's marble toilets are exquisite. ;)

We walked back to the Monte Carlo (where we're staying), holding hands, clearly looking like a family - funny how the pimps don't offer us the cards with the lovely ladies on them the way they do to people without kids. The snap the cards together to get your attention, then hand the cards to people as they walk by. Singles, couples alike - everybody gets a card. Except us, when they see us they turn around and walk away! It's a strange (and very acceptable to me) kind of discrimination. But, make no mistake. Our kids know what is going on. People drop the cards on the ground, so they're everywhere. Josie picked one up and said "What is that?!" and dropped it like it was contaminated. We told her it was an advertisement for sex, that that was legal here. She seemed truly shocked. [This is not what we meant when we said we wanted to take the kids on trips that would have educational value, for what it's worth.] Josie then said earnestly, "I hope I don't get caught up in Vegas fever." So sweet. When Mitch and I were walking together, he nearly broke his neck craning around to see one of the cards on the ground. Sam saw her share, too. Ah, biology, my favorite subject.

Ice cream capped the night for the kiddos, and they are now sound asleep. We're headed to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon tomorrow!
